James Cash Penney, or J.C. Penney, opened a store in Wyoming in 1902 that would go on to become JCPenney department stores. The stores became ubiquitous across the U.S. in the 20th century and at one point in the 1970s earned over $5 billion in revenue across 2,053 stores. But, with the rise of online shopping, the company came across hard times and in 2020 filed for bankruptcy. Will JCPenney and other department stores survive into the future?
